Meena is seventeen and most of her time is spent studying Indian dance with a family friend, obsessing about her favourite Bollywood star and crushing over a dumb jock at school.
Her name means Fish Eyes, just one of the many parts of her cultural heritage that she finds embarrassing. Meena struggles with the desire to fit in while accidentally absorbing wisdom from her elder. She will eventually realize that she actually loves to dance and to excel at something and that there is nothing wrong with swimming against the tide.
Anita Majumdar is masterful at playing all the characters. She is such an appealing performer and her combination of drama, comedy and dance is very fun to watch. I highly recommend the show.
January 27–31 at The Cultch. Parts 2 & 3, Boys With Cars + Let Me Borrow That Top, are performed 8pm on January 28, 30, 31. You don't have to see both to appreciate Majumdar's skill.
