This image in the VIFF catalogue immediately conjured memories of moving days, my own or for friends, and the resistance, frustration, goofiness, and exhaustion those longs days inevitably created. And a red couch on the streets of Taipei is just absurd.

Pinoy Sunday is about two Filipino migrant workers in Taipei, who find a new couch and decide to take it back to their dingy dormitory. But the movie is more than that: it illustrates the conflict between their dreams of better, richer lives and the loneliness and discrimination they endure in their day-to-day lives as the means to that end. But more than that: at the core, is the depth of Dado and Manuel's friendship, their long history, their chemistry, and their trust in each other. This movie is more than a funny buddy-buddy road movie: it's charming and thoughtful and sad and hopeful.
