Action Girl Comics

Mindy Abramowitz

I am by no means a connoisseur of comics, and usually confine my reading to one or two titles. Now Action Girl Comics makes it three. This anthology of stories and artwork by female cartoonists, edited by Sarah Dyer, observes the credo "girl-positive and female-friendly—never anti-boy." My favourite piece in number two is "Gwen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," by Jennifer Sorenson. Tired of viewing the world from the back of the bike, Gwen asserts herself, demotes Biff to passenger and takes on Jocko and Trixie, a "big haired couple on a souped-up cycle," in a race across Tennessee. Published by Slave Labor Graphics, Action Girl appears to be a quarterly. Number three is reportedly out there somewhere, although I have yet to locate it.
