Geist web interns learn digital publishing and communications through hands-on experience. Thanks to a small office and a generous staff and editorial board, web interns have many opportunities to observe the inner workings of a successful quarterly Canadian cultural magazine. Interns leave Geist with great industry contacts and inroads to publishing jobs across Canada.
We’re looking for enthusiastic, dedicated interns who:
- have basic technical knowledge of web publishing (HTML and CSS)
- have experience working with images editors such as Photoshop
- have experience working with text editors such as Dreamweaver
- have good working knowledge of social media platforms
- are familiar with online tools and trends (blogs, podcasts, video, digital publishing, online marketing, etc.)
- have excellent writing and communication skills
TERMS:
- 3-month positions @ 20 hours per week
- 6-month positions @ 12 hours per week
- Applications accepted any time
TRAINING:
- Hands-on work in many areas of magazine publishing (see Tasks, below)
- Participation in in-house workshops given by Geist staff
- Participation in editorial board meetings
HOW TO APPLY:
- Submit you resume to geist@geist.com.
- Include the internship term you are applying for
- Include a list of magazines and newspapers you read regularly
- Include a list of software and programs you are comfortable with (word processing, spreadsheet, page composition, image-tweaking, web design, social media platforms)
- Write 50 words on who you think reads Geist (print) and why
- Write 50 words on who you think visits geist.com and why
Note: These last two points are not a quiz with right and wrong answers. Geist staff, board, interns and volunteers are always exploring these questions, and we want to know what approaches you’ll bring to the mix.
Bonus:
- Write a one-page summary of your thoughts on geist.com, or any print issue of Geist. Aspects to mention include quality, tone or balance of writing, editing, artwork, page layout, ads, humour quotient.
Note: Don’t hesitate to include suggestions for improvement. A critical appraisement will enhance the force of your summary: we love gushing, but we won’t believe you if that’s all you have to say.
