A note to Stephen Osborne about his Letter to Subscribers, on summer fiction, enclosed in Geist 65: Fiction is your business. For many of us who don’t have the luxury of daily contact we are stuck with the editorial page and many other kinds of uninspired writing. Not all of us can appreciate fiction on a regular basis in all its many forms (good for you or not). As a visual artist I would be delighted if The New Yorker devoted an issue to painting and sculpture. It’s never happened to my knowledge. Take a vacation and forget it. People love fiction and that’s what counts.
