What made me renew my subscription to Geist was the story “Bindertwine Queen,” by C. E. Coughlan (Geist 66). It’s been years since I’ve seen the word bindertwine (and I doubt that most people even know what it means), let alone in print alongside a story about being dragged across Europe as a kid and another about meeting Andy Warhol in New York. How could I resist this mix of urban and rural, odd and wonderful?
