Much like Way of Nature, Sweetgrass is an unnarrated document of farm life. In this case the subject is a remote sheep farm in Montana, the last one to take their sheep on a long long summer trek to high mountain pastures. The scenery is astonishing, as are the many shots of hundreds of sheep on the move, along roads, through small towns (ghost towns?), fields and forests. Sheep are a stoic bunch and they don’t seem to mind the hardships: the long walk or the indignity of being shorn and then sent out into the snow.
The sheepherders could learn a thing or two about calm and patience from the Swedish farmer from Way of Nature – this bunch are constantly griping and complaining and you get the sense that this lifestyle is just too hard for modern Americans. It’s a totally original take on the idea of the American West and the last frontier.
