Geist is planned six months to even a year in advance, but when it comes down to the last few days before shipping it off to the printer, all our staff come together to layout, proof and edit the issue. Here is Josh Wallaert, the latest addition to our Geist staff, and Sarah Maitland, the editing veteran (well. . . in terms of Geist years), hard at work on all 88 pages of Geist 72, going through every single dotted i, crossed t, and trying to figure out the best mop image to use for a Notes and Dispatches article.
Patty Osborne, our layout/production manager, and Steffen Quong, our designer, working on our new cover. The people of Geist have taken a bold step in the new redesign; it’s not only environmentally friendly but it also incorporates the work of multiple designers, including one of our favourite artists, and co-proprietor of The Regional Assembly of Text, Rebecca Dolen.
K&H Dispatch Courier come to our office telling us we have a shipment and it’s the magazines. After all our overtime, extra stress and waiting around, we’ll finally see the final product. Josh and I are excited as we take a ride in our 100-year-old freight elevator to the loading dock to pick up the magazines.
This is what shows up in the loading dock: our blood, sweat and literary tears were put into Geist 72, and it’s being delivered in a graffiti-covered delivery truck. I guess that’s small cultural magazines for ya. We load up the freight elevator and send the first batch of magazines up to the Geist staff for a look-over.
Here is Patty checking out the magazine, specifically reading page 44/45—Goran Basaric’s “Memory in Belgrade” piece. The magazine is out in the real world now, and we want your thoughts on the new redesign. We set up a place for you to tell us what you think and see what other readers think: Sound Off on the New, Greener Geist.
