The third film by the Canadian director Reg Harkema, Monkey Warfare, is an intelligent and unusual feature about a Toronto couple who operate outside the scope of state controls by recycling garbage and reselling garage-sale finds. A beautiful and rebellious pot dealer enters their lives and catches their enthusiasm for the radical politics and culture of the 1970s, but her fervour to take direct action eventually dredges up the couple’s longkept secret. Monkey Warfare includes a hilarious instructional video on Molotov cocktails (in French) after the credits end.
