A settler writer of Mennonite-Ukrainian and British descent, David Huebert is the author of Chemical Valley, Peninsula Sinking, and a forthcoming novel, Oil People.
The origin story of the Wolastoq was told to the author by Cecelia Brooks of Wabanaki Tree Spirit, and the Canadian Rivers Institute. Cecelia’s version is an expanded version of that told by Gabe Paul. Cecelia, who also works in conservation, directed the author to a study by R. Allen Curry, “Late Glacial Impacts on Dispersal and Colonization of Atlantic Canada and Maine by Freshwater Fishes,” which offers scientific evidence to support the story the Wolastoqiyik have been telling for ten thousand years.
