Cathleen Kirkwood is enrolled in the MFA Creative Writing program at UBC. She has been published in several literary journals, including Grain, Fireweed and the Antigonish Review. Her “Guthrip” won third prize in the 1st Annual Geist Literal Literary Postcard Story Contest.

Why doesn’t anyone in North America say barmy for balmy? According to my research, Barmy came first and still enjoys a jolly life. But most North American dictionaries don’t even mention the earlier Scots barmy.
