Learn more about the magazine and publishing industries—volunteer at Geist! All you need is energy, enthusiasm and a commitment of at least 4 hours per week.

Reading Collective

Geist is seeking volunteers to read and comment on submissions across genres (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, comics) and make suggestions for our Findings section (excerpts). We’re particularly looking for readers with a strong sense of literary non-fiction and familiarity with our magazine.

Members of the volunteer Reading Collective will receive complimentary copies of the magazine and be credited in the issues they work on. Volunteers are welcome to submit their own work for consideration to the Notes & Dispatches, In Camera and Endnotes sections of the magazine and will be invited to post-production writing hangouts (optional).

  • We ask for a minimum 6-month commitment
  • Max. 4 hours per week. Read and comment remotely via Submittable
  • Before applying, read several issues of Geist, or dig into the archives at geist.com, to get a sense of the kind of the work we publish

We encourage applications from those who self-identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, people with disabilities, and people from other intersectional and marginalized groups.

To apply, please email your CV to geist@geist.com, with the subject line: Reading Collective. Tell us what genres you’d like to read for and mention a few things you’ve enjoyed reading lately.

Deadline: August 28, 2023.

Due to the volume of applications we receive for volunteer positions, we will only reach out to successful candidates. Thank you.

Volunteers

Volunteers help with administrative tasks, including data entry, stuffing envelopes, mailing magazines and whatever else comes up. They also help out at events and workshops, and attend for free. We’re looking for volunteers who take initiative and bring their unique insights and skills to the magazine. Volunteers are welcome to read and comment on submissions, submit their own work for consideration and contribute to the Notes & Dispatches and Endnotes sections of the magazine. Geist volunteers form an integral part of our tight-knit team and receive an introduction to different aspects of magazine publishing, including submission management, social media, digital publishing and circulation. They are also invited to attend all in-house workshops on editing, proofreading, fact-checking, review-writing and other aspects of the writerly life.

Interns

Geist also offers paid internships on a project-by-project basis when funds are available. Almost all of our paid interns and staff began as volunteers themselves. Volunteering is the best way to learn the ins and outs of the Geist office, and to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become an intern.

Email your resume and cover letter to geist@geist.com to apply.
