Le mot juste... peut-être!

A note from a French speaker here - in French 'convaincre' (to convince) means using logic and reason, while persuader (to persuade) means getting through to the person through their emotions or beliefs. You could therefore persuade someone to jump off a bridge for you, or convince them it would be a good idea to do so. The distinction seems to be echoed, if perhaps more subtly, in the modern English definitions.
