Day 11: Alphabet Day

Leannej

On May 24, the Day of Bulgarian Education, Culture and Cyrillic Alphabet, the Bulgarians celebrate the Cyrillic alphabet, devised by two brothers, Cyril and Methodius, of Bulgarian descent. On Alphabet Eve, the city of Sofia put on a fireworks display. At a stadium near us, the military played a football match against the police. All through the night we heard people chanting and cheering. It was probably the football fans we heard, but we preferred to believe it was the people of Sofia cheering, shouting, drinking—celebrating their alphabet.
