Afghan Girls Can Kick

Afghan Girls Can Kick, the girls on the Afghan Women’s National Soccer Team act much like young athletes everywhere, reveling in their ability to run, pass the ball, kick with precision, outwit their opponents and create a camaraderie through shared jokes and a common goal—despite the fact that they grew up under the repressive Taliban regime. The Taliban are no longer in power, but fundamentalists still threaten women’s freedom in Afghanistan, and suicide bombers and other violent killings are still part of daily life, so the fact that these young women were able to imagine themselves as soccer players and then were able to realize their dream is both uplifting and inspiring—and the team's excellent showing in their first full-fledged tournament (on a real soccer field) makes this film even more fun to watch.

Catch Afghan Girls Can Kick again this Sunday at 4 p.m.
