I first met Stan briefly at the Mariposa Folk Festival on Toronto Island in 1979. His joie de vivre and bombastic style blew me away and I became an instant fan. Later in the day we met again and talked for perhaps ten minutes over coffee. I came away from the second meeting considering Stan a friend. I never saw him again, but when he died in ‘83, I felt as if a part of me was torn away. Since, I’ve met fans who had less contact than I and felt the same sense of loss. It takes a special kind of man to have that level of impact on people who realistically barely knew him at all. Stan was that, in spades.
