Eve Egoyan on Ann Southam and being a small-handed pianist

Patty Osborne

Loved yesterday's interview with Eve Egoyan on CBC radio's Queue.

Egoyan sounded nervous at first but once she got talking about Ann Southam (a Canadian composer who died recently), being a "small-handed pianist," practising on her neighbour's (Mrs. Curly's) piano, playing "in stillness" and the "combination of curiosity and fear" that new music audiences experience, her passion for and love of new music were infectious.

Egoyan is touring the west later this month:

  • Arden Theatre in Edmonton on January 21
  • Push Festival in Vancouver on January 23 and 24 (I'll see you there)
  • ArtSpring on Saltspring on January 28
  • Alix Gooldin Hall in Victoria on January 29

You can hear Egoyan on CBC Radio 3 (but you have to turn off the annoying automatic music first).

Listen to the Queue podcast here. The Egoyan interview is at 49:46.
