Geist magazine is seeking support.
In 1990—the same year the 78-day standoff of the Kanesatake Resistance in Québec took place, the Gay Games III came to Vancouver, and Canada entered an economic recession—the first issue of Geist was published. Now, over 35 years in print, Geist is more than a Canadian literary magazine—it is a living history of ideas and culture. We have published works by established writers and new voices alike, who can express the complexities and flaws, idiosyncrasies and oddball-ness of being connected to this great chunk of land in the north.
In 2026, the world is, as always, in flux, and Geist could use your support. We are launching a fundraising campaign to help our non-profit organization operate smoothly for the rest of the year, with a goal of raising $20,000 by February 27, 2026. Our subscribers and readers are the lifeblood of Geist—the reason we exist in the first place. However, the revenue from our subscriber base is minimal, and we rely heavily on grants, like many lit mags, to keep us running. Grants allow us to pay our contributors and four staff members, and go toward operating and printing expenses, which continue to go up.

While $20,000 will cover only a small portion of our printing, operational, and circulation expenses, it will be a monumental support in helping Geist be resilient to increasing costs and unexpected changes.
Geist believes that excellent, diverse literature is a vital tenet of a robust society, and integral to a healthy cultural landscape. Through the world’s cycles of upheaval, Geist has remained steadfast to the art and politics of narrative, publishing the best of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, reviews, comics, and art. Our mandate is to find and encourage a wide audience for new and established Canadian writers and artists of merit.
Geist is committed to supporting writers and artists in a myriad of ways: through publication in our print magazine which is shipped to newsstands across Canada, through tabling at festivals, by hosting reading events and writing workshops, nominating writers for literary prizes, and making our online archive available for free.
Your donation will help Geist stabilize in the year ahead, and thus, contribute to strengthening Canada’s literary community.
We are thrilled to offer the following gifts as a thank you for your support:
