Announcing the winners of the 2012 Downtown Eastside Writers' Jamboree Writing Contest.

The Geist Neighbourhood Writing Contest, open to all residents of the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, was part of the 4th Annual DTES Writers' Jamboree, a jam-packed day of readings, workshops and round table talks in April 2012.

This year's winners are:

"Organic Curare" by Jim Ryder

"Introduction to Group Therapy" by Kevin McDonough

"Nothing Happening" by Fran Diamond

The Jamboree was organized by the Writer's Studio at Simon Fraser University, with support from the Carnegie Centre, Friends of the Vancouver Public Library, People's Co-Op Book Store and the Geist Foundation. The Downtown Eastside neighbourhood of Vancouver is known as Canada's poorest postal code. It is also the site of vigorous community activism and home to many writers.

Thank you to everyone who took part! The winning entries will be published in Geist in the coming months.

VIFF 2024: Blink

Blink is a documentary film from National Geographic, which follows a Montreal family with four children, three of whom have retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition causing gradual loss of vision and probable blindness. They decide to set out on a trip around the world, in order to fill their children’s visual memories, so that they can at least recall the world and its wonders.
