Carrie Villeneuve
I finally knocked off two movies from my original long list before their last screenings, Pop Star on Ice and Cedar Boys, although additional screenings have been announced for a number of movies.
Oh, Johnny Weir. I had no idea how fabulous you actually are. When you’re on—your breathless triple axel–triple toe combinations; your refreshing honesty, about your sport in particular, and life in general; your glitter-and-more-glitter-please costumes—you’re brilliant, but when you’re off—your ill-timed drug references (“My program style is more like vodka shots and snorting coke” after a post-skate Q & A); your mental meltdowns at competition crunch time—you’re spectacular. I’m hooked, Johnny Weir, and I’ll be cheering for you at the 2010 U.S. Nationals and hoping that you return to the Olympics, though by then you’ll be competing against Canada’s own little Patrick Chan.
Last VIFF screening: Friday, October 16, 11:00 a.m. at Vancity Theatre. Cedar Boys has its last VIFF screening on Wednesday, October 14, 6:40 p.m. at Granville 7.
