VIFF: Del amor y otros demonios

Of Love and Other Demons is unarguably eye candy. The story, based on Gabriel García Márquez's novel by the same name is a wonderful visual representation of his work; full of irony, magic and beauty. The film is set in the 18th Century Spanish colony of Cartagena, Columbia, a tropical desolation. Sierva (played by 13-year-old Eliza Triana) is a pubescent girl thought to be possessed by the devil and as a result, is locked away in a convent, only to be visited by a young handsome priest and a crazy "bruja blanca" (white witch). Sierva's hair, three feet of deep red tendrils, is a character of its own and much of the film is spent traversing its lengths (a positive or a negative? You decide!).

The narrative is simplistic and in the end, the film doesn't give you enough time to indulge in the griping tragedy of the story. Would I watch it again? Yes, probably several times.
