Inspired by the metaphorical writing of Franz Kafka and Philip K. Dick, The Sandman is a absurdist story about a man who starts to lose sand from his body.

Benno is not a nice man; he’s a pompous poser who wears silk scarves and works in a snooty stamp shop. He regularly patronizes the coffee shop below his apartment but delights in insulting the woman who works there who keeps him up each night while practicing her music. His opinion is that it is just about the worst music in the world.

When a few stray specks of sand start turning up he is not concerned, but soon it is rushing from him in great gushes. And he starts to have a recurring dream about the woman from the coffee shop. The two of them are happily in love and he admires her music. When he discovers that she is also having these dreams, he knows there must be some connection.

While not all the combinations of metaphor and literal truth make complete sense, the narrative is compelling and extremely fun to watch. It’s great to see a central relationship so full of antagonistic passion.
