(dir. Michael Ostroff) uses archival photos and footage, Carr's gorgeous paintings, and readings from her biographical writing to sketch out the life of this great west coast painter. Carr was brought up in a conventional family in the conventional city of Victoria, B.C., and she struggled all her life to follow her own path and gain some acceptance from the Toronto-based art world. It took courage to set out into the forest and try to befriend the First Nations people who lived there and the film gives us a good sense of the happiness that Carr felt when she was living out of her little wooden "caravan" and sketching all day long, although it is the older, irascible Carr that mades the audience laugh. For those new to Carr's life and to her writing (is anyone still new to her paintings?), this will be a great introduction, but I've read almost everything that Carr wrote and although the visuals are worht the price of admission, the movie did not offer me anything new.
