SUMMARY: Geist Magazine is seeking a Managing Editor beginning November 4. The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing Geist’s production schedule, circulation/distribution, contest management and providing editorial support.

ABOUT GEIST:

We are a Canadian literary magazine of ideas and culture. We publish narrative (fiction and non-fiction), essays, poetry, reviews, photography, drawings, comix, puzzles and little-known facts of interest. We strive to be articulate, humorous and identifiably Canadian. Our mandate is to find and encourage a wide audience for new and established Canadian writers and artists of merit.

We offer a flexible hybrid remote schedule; however, the incumbent Managing Editor should be based in Vancouver, BC, to participate in our collaborative workflow during peak production times.

REMUNERATION:

This is a full-time position at 30 hours a week at a salary of $40,563 per annum

REPORTING:

This position reports directly to the Managing Director and the Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage Print Production Schedule: 35%

● Oversee the print production schedule for the magazine; striking a timeline, managing Asana, overseeing Copy fit, assigning and recording task distribution, scheduling and chairing internal production meetings

● Oversee the communication and coordination with external contractors as it relates to the print production schedule including printers, distributors, layout, publisher and image rights

Circulation & Marketing: 35%

● Implement subscription campaigns including gift campaigns, renewal notices and other campaigns that may arise 

● Assist in the reporting of metrics and analytics around subscription campaigns

● Manage issue inventory 

● Oversee the management of P2P 

● Track donations 

● Oversee the mailing of new issues to subscribers and distributors 

● Oversee the Geist in the Classroom (GIC) program (three times a year: spring, summer and fall)

● Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief & Managing Director on audience engagement & outreach campaigns

Editorial Support & Contest Management: 20%

● Deliver editorial oversight on the Findings section of the magazine; this includes receiving and organizing Findings proposals from volunteers, actively acquiring content for Findings, managing Publisher relations regarding permissions, credits and fees, present Findings selection for review by editorial team, and oversee preparation of Findings for layout delivery

● Actively acquire images for publication in the magazine, including managing permissions, file delivery and artist fees

● Organize and manage semi-annual writing contests, including coordinating volunteers and the editorial team through the judging process

Financial Management: 5%

● Assist the Managing Director in the development of the Marketing, Printing and Circulation departments’ budgets for the year, and administering the departments’ expenses and revenues of each issue in alignment with set budgets

● Conduct close communication with Findings and art contributors, vendors and contractors to meet production invoicing timelines

● Aid the Managing Director in compiling circulation reports for grant applications and funding acquittals

Outreach and Engagement: 5%

● Uphold an active involvement in the literary community across Canada such as attending special events, conferences and professional development opportunities where possible

● Collaborate with staff and board members to implement intersectional and anti-oppressive practices within editorial, production and workplace protocols

QUALIFICATIONS:

● Experience in Magazine production is necessary (a strong interest in publishing and Canada’s literary landscape is a plus)

● Intermediate understanding of Google Suite and Microsoft Excel is preferred

● Proven experience in subscription and circulation management

● Strong communication skills and an ability to work with internal and external stakeholders

● Exceptional organizational and attention to detail skills

● Experience with email marketing platforms, HTML/CSS, and Javascript is an asset

● Familiarity with magazine management software, Webflow, Asana, Submittable, and Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop) is an asset
