Strike/Slip

Michael Hayward

Don McKay’s Strike/Slip (McClelland & Stewart) was awarded the 27 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and, just as Geist was going to press, this year's Griffin Poetry Prize. It deserves both awards and more: poetry does not get much better than this. Intelligent without showing off, full of wisdom while remaining light of heart, the poems in this collection celebrate the world in all its elements, from its very fundament and foundation (the schists and basalt) to the most ephemeral inhabitants of the upper air: pine siskins, snow, the falling leaves. McKay is a man completely absorbed in his surroundings and Strike/Slip is his best work yet. You might think that a volume as slim as this one (78 pages) would be little more than a light snack, but you’d be wrong: this is the full meal deal.
