The Girl Wants To

Geist Staff

The Girl Wants To, edited by Lynn Crosbie (Coach House) overwhelms its readers with sheer volume. It contains everything from cartoons to photos, to articles and stories and poems, to exhibit documentation. One response is to go through the table of contents looking for familiar names and then again looking for suggestive titles—which is a touchy way of doing things, given the book's subject. Then there is the daunting job of reading the tiny type. The book as a whole seems crammed, and its editorial range incomprehensibly broad. An anthology of erotica poses the question: who is the reader? If the reader is voyeur, then the book becomes pornography; if the reader is participant the book is discursive text. This anthology of "women's erotica" does not confront this dual positioning issue, opting instead for a kind of porno pluralism which will make some readers, well, sigh.
