The Old Farmer's Almanac

Geist Staff

The Special Canadian Edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac, from Yankee Publishing Inc., is subtitled "Fitted for Ottawa, with special corrections and calculations for all the Canadian provinces." Items of interest include "Who is the Canadian Farmer?," "The House With the Most Cats Under One Roof In North America" (in Kingston, Ont.), a snappy story of the demise of the Red Baron at the hands of Canadian flyers, the story of Doctor James Barry, a woman who, disguised as a man, became the Inspector General of Hospitals for Upper and Lower Canada in 1857—after serving forty years in the British army. Geister historian Daniel Francis contributes a piece on the redoubtable E. Cora Hind, internationally renowned crop forecaster at the turn of the century and, in the words of a colleague, "the best newspaperman in Western Canada." And the obligatory ice-floe piece is about Wilfred "Grenfell of Labrador." Good weather forecasts, too, at least for this part of the country.
