Be More Controllive

Suggestions from grade ten students at a high school in British Columbia on how the teacher can get the class to pay attention, compiled by the teacher, Mary Leah de Zwart.

When someone is not paying attention you can separate that person. Or you can start yelling loud.

Separate the people who talks out.

Turn the lights on and off, don’t yell, you’ll lose your voice.

Get a vissel and blow it every time.

When anyone talks you should send them to the office.

Beat the crap out of somebody. Tell them to shut up. Yell! Flick the lights.

Separate the guys! Or kick them out. By the way I feel sorry for you.

We should have a bell to ring, or a clapping game where the teacher claps and we copy the teacher.

I think you should make them write lines and be more controllive.

Give us candy if we’re quite.

I could improve in this class by sitting alone.

I remember having a lot of suggestions for improving school when I was in tenth grade. Was it equally unimaginative? Equally disastrously misspelled? That’s not cute in a tenth-grader.
The problem is systemic. Mine was an ordinary middle-class public school, but the kids drank and smoked like crazy. One would assume it was common sense: 15 year-olds having to sit still for 8 hours while being force-fed information they can neither relate to their passions nor to lives outside a bureaucratic, suburban future. The deadening lack of creativity of the place! The white walls! The intolerable classmates! The treacle of the adults! I’m not so old as not to remember how much I hated it.
