13 Most Beautiful... Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests

Kris Rothstein

The Andy Warhol Museum commissioned these thirteen songs which were written and performed by musicians Dean and Britta (formerly in the pop groups Luna and Galaxie 500). Some of the tunes are dreamy instrumentals while others are groovy jams inspired by The Velvet Underground. Each is played over a different silent black and white Andy Warhol film portrait.

Even though the people behind me thought Andy Warhol was over-rated (they were also just out of rehab and thought social drinking would be fine) I came out of the show with more respect for him than ever. Not only were the screen tests beautifully shot and lit, they all seemed to catch the essence of the personality on film: Lou Reed was cocky, Billy Name cool, Dennis Hopper intense, Baby Jane Holzer playful and Nico restless. It also made me want to read a really good book about The Factory.

VIFF 2024: Blink

Blink is a documentary film from National Geographic, which follows a Montreal family with four children, three of whom have retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition causing gradual loss of vision and probable blindness. They decide to set out on a trip around the world, in order to fill their children’s visual memories, so that they can at least recall the world and its wonders.
