The Great Contemporary Art Bubble

Kris Rothstein

This documentary is dramatic, alarming, controversial and full of action – not bad for the story of a critic investigating art prices. Lewis even leaks a shocking document to the press which may have been one of the many factors to finally burst this bubble.

There is more material than I can explain but Lewis does a fantastic job of following the money and explaining who had to most to gain through the inflation of prices of contemporary art (specifically the work of 10 – 30 artists working in the last decade or two). He targets the art dealers, gallery owners and auction houses who manipulated this completely unregulated market to their own ends.

Some may disagree with Lewis’ interpretation but all viewers will leave this film with plenty of food for thought. The last screening is on Oct 9th at 12:40pm at the Granville cinema.
