Bastion Falls

Patty Osborne

I didn't expect to like Bastion Falls by Susie Moloney (Key Porter) because the back cover describes it as spine-tingling. I don't usually like having my spine tingled, but Bastion Falls was a pleasant surprise. This is a Canadian thriller that doesn't try to be anything else. There's a huge snowstorm in the story (Bastion Falls is "up north" somewhere), as well as a 1976 Dodge Ram half-ton (broken down by the side of the road in the middle of the storm), and a snow plough in a ditch. The setting and the characters alone make this worthwhile reading—worthwhile enough that I was only a little bit reluctant to go along with the slightly supernatural events. Take this thick white book home to read on a long winter's night.
