Say what you want about Hollywood, they have standards when it comes to the production values of their products, especially DVDs. I wish the same could be said of other DVDs, such as Bruce Sweeney’s Last Wedding, available from ThinkFilm. This DVD isn’t much better than video and the extra features consist of interview clips with the actors—their answers only; no questions—with no subtitles to identify the speakers. It’s as if it didn’t occur to the DVD producers that anyone outside the local film community would be watching the DVD. Which is too bad, because the indigenous filmmaking scene in Vancouver is at the top of its game: in 22 the Toronto International Film Festival opened with Last Wedding. The movie—Sweeney’s third—is a sophisticated film that shows the breakup of three relationships. Despite the poor presentation of the cast interviews, the actors have interesting comments about working with Sweeney, and praise for his habit of workshopping his scripts with the actors well in advance of filming. Nice movie, shame about the DVD.
